Much of the high cost of healthcare stems from an information technology environment that is fragmented, inconsistent and rarely automated. More than $36 billion has been allocated by Congress to address this need in the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act, a part of the federal economic stimulus package. The kinds of data involved is virtually unlimited and includes clinical information; such as test results, medications, diagnostic reports, and popular EMR systems as well as financial, including claims, insurance, and estimates of benefits. This offers the opportunity for better coordination of care, fewer tests, and overall cost reduction.
